"I would like to see us go to assigning those committees before the school year starts," a board member said, arguing that midyear switches reduce continuity for committees that negotiate insurance, boundaries and other recurring business.
Members asked staff to distinguish statutory appointments from discretionary panel seats such as the Arts Council or certain advisory groups. Several board members suggested removing the Calendar Committee and questioned whether the Boundary Advisory and Code of Conduct committees require a standing board member on each panel, noting staff could gather community input and bring recommendations to the full board.
The board also discussed the district—s strategic plan and governance role. Board members said they want the strategic plan—s vision and goals owned by the elected board rather than driven primarily by staff-level committees or external consultants. Superintendent Main told the board the district will shift some strategic work away from Cognia and align future planning with the district—s Studer consultant to better match board expectations and data use.
The board directed staff to research which committees are statutory, which can be retired or consolidated, and to return recommended policy revisions for formal consideration. The chair asked that committee-selection options and any revised policies be presented at a July or August workshop so assignments can be finalized before the new school year.
