Council okays $11,514.25 purchase of radio equipment for remote-station replacement

The Common Council authorized a purchase of radio equipment from E2E for $11,514.25 for the remote station radio replacement project.
A utility staff member explained the town operates two radio systems that provide communications between the treatment plant, towers, and pump stations; one system also carries video and higher-bandwidth data. "Those were, as it's shown here, 12 to 15 years old, well past their useful life," the utility staff member said. The staff member said the utility previously replaced a failed 900-megahertz radio with newer equipment and experienced "huge" improvements and fewer dropouts.
The staff member said the proposed procurement is a normal lifecycle replacement and that funds for the purchase have been available. Councilmembers asked whether the previously replaced radios were the same brand; the staff member said the new purchase is the same brand but a different supplier and cited the supplier's responsiveness as a factor in the recommendation.
A motion to authorize the utility engineer to purchase the equipment was moved, seconded and passed on roll call.
