School board hires outside counsel to appeal FEMA denial on Central School roof

Staff described the FEMA decision as a denial of a claim the board had filed; during the meeting staff said the denied amount was approximately $5,000,000. The board approved engaging Baker Donelson on a not-to-exceed-fee basis of $25,000 so the firm can prepare and file the appeal.
During discussion, staff said the district had already provided maintenance records and drone footage to FEMA and that the proposed attorney had the material needed to prepare an appeal letter. Board members asked whether other firms could handle the appeal; staff recommended Baker Donelson because appeals to FEMA are a specialized practice area.
The motion to hire Baker Donelson passed unanimously. Staff said the next step is to execute the agreement and proceed with the appeal work.
