Board amends calendar to make Presidents' Day an instructional day to recover minutes

The Nassau County School Board voted to amend the 2024-25 school calendar so that Presidents' Day (Feb. 17) will be a regular instructional day, allowing the district to meet statutory instructional-minute requirements following recent weather closures.
Dr. Burns explained that staff had reviewed instructional minutes with school leaders and recommended using Presidents' Day as a make-up day. She said some schools would make minor adjustments to the daily schedule (recess or minutes adjustments) to distribute required minutes across the semester.
The board made a motion, seconded it, and approved the amendment by voice vote. The superintendent said the change would be communicated to families and posted as required.
No roll-call tally was read into the record during the vote; the superintendent and trustees framed the decision as necessary to comply with state statute on instructional minutes.
