West Nassau AFJROTC cadets brief board on national title, flight programs and community service

West Nassau AFJROTC leaders and cadets briefed the board on unit achievements, community service and flight-training opportunities during a five-minute presentation.
Colonel Klein said the unit regularly briefs local town councils and wanted to share its accomplishments with the school board. Cadet Kennem Kasha, group commander, summarized unit goals and outcomes, reporting that 92% of cadets met a community-service eligibility target and that retention goals for after-school participation were being met.
Cadet Chase Gester and other cadets highlighted athletic and leadership achievements: the unit won the national orienteering championship in 2023-24 and will send nine members to defend the title. Cadets reported approximately 1,200 community-service hours and 747 awards overall, including 27 national-level awards. They also described an "Adopt-a-Family" program that raised about $1,600 to provide gift cards to families at local schools; cadets contributed small weekly donations rather than staging a formal fundraiser.
Colonel Klein described flight opportunities: cadets fly with the Civil Air Patrol, the district owns two training airplanes, and eligible juniors may participate in an FAA ground-school class. He said four cadets earned scholarships to attend the National Flight Academy (scholarship values cited at about $26,000 per student in the presentation) and will learn their summer assignments in March. The unit also noted Cadet Braxton Lee's congressional nomination for the U.S. Air Force Academy, pending final decision.
Board members and attendees applauded the cadets and the program's community outreach.
