Board debates cutting to one meeting a month, scheduling workshops to permit live streaming

The Nassau County School Board discussed proposals to change its meeting cadence and to set workshop dates in advance so the district can schedule live streaming.
Staff presented two options: Option 1 would retain two regular board meetings per month (second and fourth Thursdays) and place workshops on a set schedule so the vendor can be booked for live streaming. Option 2 would move to one regular monthly meeting and one scheduled workshop each month, with the potential for an earlier start time to allow more in-depth discussion and staff availability.
"I've thought about this. Which one would be more appropriate? ... I think transparency is critical," Board Member Mister Zimmerman said, urging more streaming and public access. Staff noted technical and cost constraints: the contractor charges about $500 per streamed meeting and satellite meetings at school sites cannot be streamed with current equipment.
Board members were split. Some favored continuing current practice with more scheduled workshops; others supported trying Option 2 (one meeting plus a workshop) to reduce the rapid agenda turnaround and give staff more time. The board did not take a final vote but asked staff to bring the proposal back as an action item with proposed policy changes and proposed start dates. Trustees discussed piloting Option 2 and returning to the current practice if it proved impractical.
The discussion also covered public-access considerations, required budget meetings that should be streamed, and the need to advertise any policy change in accordance with board rules.
