Staff presented Senate Bill 225A in a work session on June 11 and noted fiscal and revenue impacts. Vice Chair Walters moved to send the bill to the floor with a due-pass recommendation and a subsequent referral to the Joint Committee on Tax Expenditures.
Representative Marsh said she was "very sympathetic to the idea of assisting our veterans" but could not support the bill because it would apply to all veterans regardless of income. "I can't in good conscience vote for a measure that would give a significant tax benefit to people who are well beyond median income," Marsh said, noting staff estimates that some veterans impacted could have incomes over $100,000.
The committee proceeded to a roll-call vote. The clerk recorded votes that resulted in passage of the motion; the committee announced the bill will be referred to the Joint Committee on Tax Expenditures for further consideration.
Chair Nathanson closed the work session on SB 225A.
