Board approves CalVet certificates of compliance for veteran services office

The Board of Supervisors authorized the chairman to sign two California Department of Veterans Affairs documents: the Medi-Cal certificate of compliance and the CalVet Subvention Certificate of Compliance for fiscal year 2024-25.
David Hernandez, the county's veteran services officer, outlined the office's outreach and assistance, saying the unit operates by appointment to provide detailed assistance to veterans and dependents on benefits, cemetery, health and educational waivers. Hernandez reported that in the past year the office filed claims for 1,757 veterans that resulted in about $2.2 million in new benefits and processed 257 tuition/fee waivers valued at roughly $2 million for dependents.
Board members commended the office's work. Supervisor Price and others said veteran services help aging veterans with technology navigation and benefit access, and Supervisor Price noted the Veteran Community Advisory Committee's ongoing work. The board approved the requested signatures (motion by Supervisor Kelly, seconded by Supervisor Price; motion carried 5-0).
