Lakemore residents urge support for local food programs; volunteers, council reflect on Rock the Docks changes

Volunteers and residents used the Nov. 3 council meeting to raise two community concerns: growing demand for local food assistance and regret that the longstanding Rock the Docks event has diminished.

A volunteer identified in the record as Heather described the Spartan Snack Pack program, which provides weekend meal packs for children and operates a monthly food pantry, and said demand has increased amid uncertainty about federal benefits. Heather announced a GoFundMe titled “Feed Hope Support Spartan Snack Pack and Pantry,” saying donations remain local and support families in Springfield and Lakemore. At the meeting she said, “kids shouldn’t have to go to bed hungry,” and urged donations and volunteer help. Council members listed local food pantries and noted a new small pantry in town for nonperishable drop‑offs.

Several speakers, including resident John Yergan and longtime volunteers and council members, discussed the status of Rock the Docks, an event that had run for years. Yergan said he was disappointed by recent developments and described it as “insulting” if organizers were asked to pare the event to a single day after years of effort; other speakers explained that rising security, insurance and staffing costs and increased attendance from outside the community altered the event’s character and contributed to decisions to reduce or cancel it. Council members and volunteers expressed appreciation for past organizers and held out hope that a smaller, community‑focused event might return in the future.
