Pearson VUE outlines new national exam content, state review and Texas testing coverage; TREC reports 55% first-time pass rate

Pearson VUE presented an annual briefing to the Texas Real Estate Commission on Nov. 3 covering content development, item revalidation, testing locations and candidate procedures.
Carrie Dahl, Pearson VUE business development manager, described a 2023 national job-task analysis that fed a national exam rollout in April 2025 and ongoing item revalidation. ‘‘A few years ago in 2023, we launched a national JTA... In April 2025, that launched, with Texas, the new national exam,’’ Dahl said. She told the commission the Texas state portion underwent an in-person review in late October and that state-specific items will go live in January 2026.
Testing coverage and candidate experience: Pearson said Texas has more than 200 testing locations (29 Pearson-owned centers and about 197 partner sites), including five military/government sites. Candidate procedures were reviewed: two forms of identification at check-in, photos and same-day pass/fail score reports issued at the test center.
Pass rates and state reporting: Jennifer Wheeler, TREC's director of education and exams, reported fiscal-year 2025 first-time pass rates were 55 percent for both sales agents and brokers. Overall pass rates were higher — 78 percent for sales agents and 82 percent for brokers. Wheeler said the agency publishes exam-topic reports to help applicants prepare.
Why it matters: Changes to exam content and state test items affect pre-licensing education, test-preparation providers and applicants. Pearson and TREC noted that in-person item reviews and national job-task analyses inform what candidates must know to be licensed in Texas.
Next steps: Pearson VUE and TREC will deploy the revised state items in January 2026 and continue to publish candidate materials, including updated candidate handbooks and score reports. TREC staff said they will provide additional pass-rate detail to commissioners on request.
