The Salinas City Council voted unanimously to authorize Mayor Donahue to sign an amendment increasing City Attorney Christopher Callahan's annual compensation to $300,000, city staff said. The increase will be prorated; staff reported the adjustment amounts to about $27,000 for the remainder of the current fiscal year.
Staff presented the item as a follow-up to performance reviews conducted in closed session on Oct. 14 and Oct. 28. A staff report summarized Callahan's more than 20 years with the city, including his appointment as city attorney in 2014 and the performance review process that triggers the annual compensation discussion.
Councilmembers who spoke during the public portion and on the dais said the change was intended to bring the position more in line with comparable city attorney pay in the region and to reflect Callahan's workload. After a motion and second, the council recorded a roll-call vote in which all members present voted yes.
No amendments to the employment agreement were detailed on the public record beyond the salary and classification update. A brief public comment period included a resident question about how the salary was set and a speaker who asked that the city attorney's responsiveness to constituent inquiries be reviewed; the council did not alter the proposal in response.
The action was approved by the council in open session; no litigation or other personnel discipline was reported as part of this item.
