Monticello board approves Pinewood Elementary School Forest and DNR enrollment

The Monticello School Board on Nov. 3 approved a resolution to establish and maintain a school forest and outdoor classroom at Pinewood Elementary School, and to enroll the site in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources School Forest Program.Principal Shelley Gilmore described the project as the result of a No Child Left Inside grant that supplies equipment at the district NatureBase and supports a small school forest at Pinewood. Gilmore said the initiative includes staff, retired teachers and parents on a planning committee and that the forest will be used for STEM, reading, math and science instructional activities. The resolution named the site (1010 West Broadway Street) and requested board support for ongoing maintenance and DNR enrollment.
The motion was moved by Jeff Hegley, seconded by Mary Bartel; board approval was recorded by voice vote. Board members thanked staff and grant writers for securing the funding.
