A student-led club at Monticello High School plans to create handmade cards and letters for children facing serious illnesses. Alicia Gru, a senior, told the school board Nov. 3 that she founded a Letters of Love chapter at MHS after applying and interviewing with the organization’s founders.
“Monticello High School is now a member of this growing organization,” Gru said, and reported that the club has already held two meetings with more than 30 students and produced about 100 cards. Letters of Love headquarters funded the club’s start-up supplies; local businesses Walmart and QuikTrip donated snacks and refreshments for meetings. The club meets once a month before school in Hegley’s classroom and has an executive board of mostly juniors and seniors.
Board members asked about the club’s funding needs and sustainability after Gru graduates. She said current fundraising needs are modest—“$50” to supplement supplies—and the club plans to recruit underclass students to continue leadership roles.
