Needham IT seeks cybersecurity officer, adds enterprise apps staff amid budget season

Staff described the proposed cybersecurity position as an operational governance role rather than a senior technical penetration-testing specialist: responsibilities would include policy oversight, staff training and ensuring incident response procedures are followed and documented. IT leaders told the committee that they would include the role in the FY budget request and that it would be scoped to the town's current needs and fiscal constraints.
Staffing and hiring: the town added an enterprise applications hire (interim) and, for the first time, has three staff on the enterprise apps team to support the ERP implementation. IT staff reported increased applicant flow for technician positions but said the market quality varies.
Training and professional development: staff described a purchase of a learning management system with a professional-development module that will centralize staff training and provide technology-focused PD for both town and school employees. The committee also discussed targeted AI pilots and other training pilots for back-office staff.
Next steps: the town will present detailed budget items during the capital- and budget-review process; hiring for the proposed cybersecurity role and additional app-support positions will be addressed in that timetable.
