Cobb County names James D. Farrell as police chief; board votes 5-0

James D. Farrell was appointed Cobb County police chief after a unanimous 5-0 vote by the Board of Commissioners during their Oct. 28 meeting. The board approved the county manager's recommendation that Farrell, who has spent more than three decades with the department and had been serving as interim chief, assume the permanent post.

County manager Dr. McMorris recommended the appointment, telling the board Farrell's "experience, his dedication throughout his 32 year career in law enforcement has prepared him to lead our police department." The board moved and seconded the appointment and the motion carried five-zero.

Farrell, who rose through the department ranks from patrol officer to major, received his chief's badge as part of a brief ceremony. After being sworn in he said, "I really appreciate the support," and thanked the commissioners, the county manager and the public safety director for their guidance during his interim tenure.

The board administered the oath at the meeting and presented family members at the dais. Farrell acknowledged his family's ties to law enforcement, noting both his father's and brother's careers in policing and saying he appreciates the community's support.

The appointment followed a public-comment period during which local public-safety supporters urged confirmation. Susan Hampton, who identified herself as a long-time resident and board member of the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation, said Farrell's "extensive resume and his 29 years with Cobb County, Police Department shows that he is a wonderful choice" and urged the board to proceed.

Board members congratulated Farrell and welcomed him to the role. The county manager and public safety director were recognized at the ceremony for their roles in the transition.

No additional conditions or contingencies were announced at the time of the vote.
