The Elkhart Board of Works voted Oct. 21 to approve specifications and grant permission to advertise the Courthouse Demolition Project (project 25-20).
City staff told the board the city will proceed with demolition once the county provides a firm sale or transfer date and that the City of Elkhart will "inherit" the courthouse per the transfer schedule. The redevelopment commission, not the Board of Works, will take up reuse planning and any consultant work for redevelopment.
Board members asked whether the demolition covers the entire building or only an addition; city staff clarified the demolition covers the entire building and that the structure is not designated historic. The motion to approve specifications and advertise the project carried by voice vote.
