Mar Vista NJROTC: school program grows to about 170 cadets, emphasizes leadership and service

Eric Collins, senior naval science instructor at Mar Vista High School, and student leaders presented the school’s NJROTC program during the Sept. 3 meeting. Collins said the program has grown from roughly 75 cadets two years ago to about 170 cadets this year.
Commanding officer Cadet Allison Bell and executive officer Cadet Marty Pimentel described daily routines that include classroom instruction, physical training and drill practice. Pimentel said cadets run uniform inspections, prepare for ceremonies and participate in community events. The program reported more than 700 cumulative community service hours this year.
"Being a part of the NJROTC program for 4 years, I've learned that it's a lot more than the special ribbons and medals that cling onto our uniforms," a cadet told the council, saying the program "provides the youth with the ability to evoke change that is everlasting." The students outlined upcoming events, including Neptune Olympics and field trips to the Aerospace Museum.
Council members praised the instructor team and cadets for recruitment and student mentorship. Several members noted the program’s role in community service and said they value the program’s contributions to local events. No formal action or funding was requested during the presentation.
