Carroll County honors teachers and students for statewide awards and perfect scores

The Carroll County Board of Education used its Aug. 21 meeting to recognize staff and students for statewide and national accomplishments.

Dr. Jessica Ainsworth began the recognitions, noting that Carroll County ‘‘takes pride in recognizing the accomplishments of our school, staff, and students.’’ She announced that Robin Porter, a computer science teacher at Villa Rica High School, received an Innovation in Computer Science Award from the Georgia Department of Education and State School Superintendent Richard Woods. Dr. Ainsworth also announced that 45 students achieved perfect scores on the spring Georgia Milestones assessment and asked them to move to the lobby for a group photo.

Superintendent Scott Cowher highlighted several district recognitions: three high schools — Bowden High School, Central High School and Temple High School —were named among U.S. News & World Report’s best high schools; 11 schools were recognized as Beta Clubs of Distinction and 10 as Beta Schools of Merit; two student-athletes were named to the AJC Super 11 team; and a Bowden High School baseball team was honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association for team academic excellence. Cowher also noted teacher Nina Boyd presented in California and discussed growth in students earning advanced academic diplomas. The superintendent reminded the board of upcoming events, including cluster community conversations and an annual band exhibition scheduled for Sept. 30 at Hill River High School.

Board members offered congratulations and brief comments; the recognitions were ceremonial and did not require board action.
