The board conducted the first reading of a proposed board policy on artificial intelligence (BP 0441) that the district received from its policy provider (Gamut/CSBA). Board members and staff discussed the policy as a framework and noted that Gamut has provided the board-level policy text so far, with operational administrative regulations (ARs) expected as the state and vendor guidance evolves.
Trustees raised the idea of forming a local AI advisory committee to establish guardrails tailored to Lennox'specific needs (pre-K to 8) and to advise on procurement, student data protection and classroom use. Staff noted that teachers are beginning to ask how AI could be used instructionally and that vendor contracts and student data protections (FERPA and child-privacy rules) will be central concerns as the district considers software and purchasing decisions.
In the same policy block, trustees discussed changes to the district website and student-photo options. The board opted to proceed with the standard option the district has followed in recent years (publish student images with names unless a parent opts out on the annual consent form). Staff said the policy language reiterates existing practice and that parents complete an opt-out form at enrollment.
No final adoption occurred; staff will follow up with Gamut/CSBA about timing for administrative regulations and consider forming a local committee to refine operational rules.
