Board approves Domino's services agreement for school-compliant pizza; staff says national vendor meets meal-pattern verification

The district approved a services contract with Domino's for a school-compliant pizza product known as "Smart Slice," a menu item staff said meets federal meal-pattern requirements and laboratory verification needed for school meals. The contract amount discussed in the meeting was approximately $240,000 for the term under review.

Nutrition services staff explained why a national chain can supply a product that satisfies USDA meal-pattern constraints: the vendor provides nutritional testing and documentation (including whole-grain and sodium specifications) that the district must have on file to serve pizza in a reimbursable school meal. "They do this nationwide, and that's why they're able to do it at a cost that a smaller local business wouldn't be able to do and keep up with the means," a member of the nutrition services team said.

Trustees asked whether local pizza businesses could qualify and bid to supply school meals. Staff said local vendors may participate but must meet the same verification, recipe standardization and laboratory testing requirements; pricing and capacity to meet meal-pattern certifications are central to procurement decisions. Staff described the decision as a rollover of an existing arrangement and said the district had already reduced how often pizza appears on menus.

Board members and staff noted the product has been used as a classroom and school incentive in some sites; nutrition staff said they expect fewer pizza-service days and that catering and end-of-year events in the prior year contributed to higher-than-budgeted spending.

The item was discussed as part of the consent agenda (C4) and was approved by the board at the meeting.
