Bay Shore will delay implementing new Earth & Space Science and updated Living Environment exams

Administrators recommended that Bay Shore delay phasing in the new Earth & Space Science course and the updated Living Environment (biology) Regents assessment. The recommendation followed reports from other Long Island districts that the new tests contained material not closely aligned to prior standards and created student frustration.

Mr. Leach (curriculum lead) and Dr. Maloney told the board that district teachers reviewed the matter and concluded that waiting would allow the district to examine multiple administrations of the new exam, identify instructional resources and give teachers more preparation time. The administration noted that districts were permitted to phase the new courses independently and that holding off would preserve students’ best opportunity to graduate on time.

Board members asked about the dissenting views: one teacher had favored moving ahead immediately, arguing readiness and the inevitability of change, but administrators said more data from other districts and additional resource development justified delay. The administration said the district retains access to past Regents materials for review and will reassess implementation timing after additional exam administrations and resource availability are better understood.

Ending: The board agreed to delay adoption and asked the administration to provide more information (a memo and data) for a future meeting, including what resources and timelines would be required to implement the new courses with confidence.
