Superintendent advisory committee advances recommendation; district plans town halls and a December board workshop on possible school consolidation

The superintendent told trustees the district's advisory council has moved from discussion to formal recommendation and staff will hold town halls and a special board workshop so the board can consider options tied to declining enrollment and fiscal constraints.

"Up until now, we've been discussing and looking at data, looking at recommendations...As you look at the road ahead, there's obviously a still a lot of work to do," the superintendent said, urging transparent town halls both during the day in the boardroom and in the evening at Lennox Middle School so parents can attend.

Staff said the council's work has been emotional for members from schools that may be affected and emphasized the need to "tell the story" to the public: explain enrollment trends, what declining enrollment means for programs and operations, and how proposed choices are intended to secure students' long-term educational opportunities. Staff said the goal is to provide the board with a full set of information and a recommendation by December.

Trustees and staff discussed scheduling, outreach and the timeline for a special board meeting in November or December to review the committee's recommendation and to hold public town halls. Board members acknowledged the personal impact of potential closures on families and staff and asked staff to ensure clear communication.

No final board decision on consolidation was made at the meeting; staff indicated the process is ongoing and described the next steps for community engagement and board deliberation.
