City management reported that the city submitted an application to CalRecycle’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Discretionary Grant Cycle 45 seeking up to $50,000 to support expanded battery and household hazardous waste collection points, public education and temporary/mobile collection events.
Samantha, a Public Works management analyst, said grant activities would include multilingual outreach and workshops, partnerships with retailers for battery drop‑off, placement of collection bins at city facilities and online maps showing drop‑off locations. Program metrics would track participation, materials collected and pre‑/post‑surveys to measure awareness and behavior change.
Council voted unanimously to approve submitting the grant application. Staff said the program aims to reduce environmental risk from improperly disposed batteries and household chemicals and to build partnerships with local retailers and community organizations if funding is awarded.
