Atchison solid-waste chute repairs will close transfer station for about a week starting Aug. 25, county says

Stacy Waggle, solid-waste director, told the commission that contractor P1 measured the chute and found more damage than anticipated. Waggle said P1 planned to begin chute repairs Aug. 25 and that the work will require closing the transfer station for approximately one week, through Labor Day.
"They realized that it's more damage than they thought. It's gonna take longer. So they're stating that we need to be closed for a week," Waggle said.
Waggle and staff said the closure would include the chute and associated operations; staff recommended closing all intake areas to avoid unmanaged dumping during construction. Commissioners and staff discussed alternate disposal options for city collection and large customers (the city previously routed loads to Leavenworth during a similar closure) and agreed to post signs, inform radio and social-media outlets and notify frequent users directly.
Waggle noted that some in-house projects would be scheduled during the closure (haul and berm work) and that staff would coordinate with local contractors. Commissioners asked that the closure notice be widely posted and shared with the Globe and local radio; solid-waste staff said signs would be hung and that city partners had been contacted.
