Staff recommended acceptance of the tariff with an effective date of Aug. 6, 2025, noting the revision reflects a nationwide transition led by the Federal Communications Commission to NextGen 911 — an IP‑based routing platform that supports richer data (text, photos, video) and better location identification.
Alden Manka (staff) told commissioners the tariff change affects a business‑to‑PSAP routing product; Verizon’s end‑use customers’ ability to call 911 will not be diminished, staff said. Verizon’s Doug Smith reiterated that NextGen 911 provides enhanced location information and accepts multimedia, and confirmed that PSAPs will need equipment and training upgrades to take advantage of NextGen features.
The commission voted unanimously to accept Verizon’s tariff filing with the recommended effective date.
No party opposed the filing at the hearing; commissioners asked staff and Verizon about PSAP equipment upgrades and training requirements. The filing was accepted for the record and will go into effect Aug. 6, 2025.
