Randolph County approves one-year SRO contract for Faith Christian School

The Randolph County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 4 authorized a one-year contract to provide a deputy school resource officer (SRO) at Faith Christian School, with the position expected to start Sept. 1.
Sheriff’s office staff said the initial 10-month cost for the remainder of the fiscal year is $75,809 and the full fiscal-year cost is about $94,655. Faith Christian School provided a letter of support and will fund the position; the sheriff’s office will cover $8,384 of the current year cost using lapsed-salary funds.
Steve Nunn (sheriff’s office) said the county already has an officer identified who has met with the school and that, under state rules, an officer who spends 19 or more hours per week in a school must be SRO-certified. Commissioners approved the contract, authorized the county manager to sign, and approved the related budget amendment.
The board and staff said the SRO agreement will be renewed annually if both parties agree; the board noted continued regional recruitment pressures for law-enforcement staff but said the sheriff’s office has an officer available for the assignment.
The motion passed by voice vote. No member of the public offered comment during the board’s discussion on the item.
