City staff told TMAC that the railroad quiet zone previously in place has been reinstated from Provo to Salt Lake City after inspections and fixes at the Salt Lake crossing identified as the remaining impediment. The city showed a map distinguishing grade‑separated crossings, quiet‑zone protected at‑grade crossings, and at‑grade freight crossings that remain subject to horn use.
Vern explained the boundary: the quiet zone ends at University Avenue (northward) for certain crossings and that several crossings south of that remain outside the quiet zone; he noted one specific north‑end crossing (820 North) where the quiet zone applies only to the UTA FrontRunner tracks and not to the adjacent freight track. Vern said he is working on bringing additional crossings into the quiet zone but that freight railroad ownership complicates the process because federal quiet‑zone rules and coordination with freight operators are required.
The update was informational; there was no action taken by TMAC.
