Provo Bicycle Collective closes; local group forms Provo Bicycle Project and pursues a Center Street site

Provo City staff told TMAC that the Provo Bicycle Collective closed its Provo site Dec. 31 and that local volunteers have formed a new nonprofit, the Provo Bicycle Project, which plans to occupy a vacant Center Street building and pursue grant support.
City staff told TMAC that the Provo Bicycle Collective (a statewide nonprofit with locations in Salt Lake City, Ogden and St. George) closed its Provo location on Dec. 31 because the parent board did not retain a local manager and the site had been losing money. The board made the decision centrally, and staff said the city did not have local control over that decision.
Local volunteers and some former Collective board members have formed a new, locally controlled organization called the Provo Bicycle Project. According to staff, the new group has identified a vacant building on Center Street—unoccupied for roughly 30 years—as a target relocation site and is pursuing month‑to‑month occupancy under local management during the transition. Staff said Provo City cannot provide direct financial support but is assisting with nonfinancial support and will help the group pursue MAG grant funding.
TMAC members noted the Collective’s mission to provide refurbished bikes, youth education classes and transportation access for low‑ and moderate‑income residents, and they welcomed the local group’s continuation of those services. Staff said the new board intends to restart education programs, youth courses and employment opportunities that were part of the Collective’s local work.
