Affordable‑housing advisory board emphasizes outreach, ADU and multifamily reviews

Chair Maggie Zalom told the City Council at the Jan. 15 advisory‑board workshop that the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee spent 2024 reviewing incentives authorized under state law — including ADU rules and parking‑bonus density — and looking at multifamily sites where a portion of units could be designated as affordable.
"We had a wonderful year in 2024," Zalom said. She described work on ordinances and multifamily projects such as Water's Edge and apartments on State Road 441 and said the committee placed special emphasis on outreach and education to counter local opposition to affordable projects.
Zalom said the committee has built partnerships with the Broward Affordable Housing Task Force and convened a countywide town hall to share best practices. She told council members the committee wants to continue bringing new stakeholders to the table in 2025.
Council members supported a proposal to hold a town hall focused on senior housing and the ‘‘silver tsunami’’ to explore impacts on senior housing supply and costs. No formal council votes were taken; the presentation was informational and the committee requested continued council support for outreach and education efforts.
