Oak Ridge board approves audits, budget transfer, policy updates, calendar and new clubs

The Oak Ridge Board of Education approved multiple routine and policy items on Jan. 14, voting unanimously on financial and personnel recommendations and adopting several policy updates.
On the superintendent—s recommendation, the board approved the FY24 internal school funds audit and FY25 budget transfer number 1 (second reading). The superintendent—s summary of the audit said school-level student activity funds reflected general fiscal management and adherence to board policies.
The board also approved revisions to board policy 4.200 (curriculum development). District staff explained the policy changes align curriculum to state standards and TSBA recommendations and reflect multiyear investments in instructional materials and teacher training. Board policies 4.603 (promotion and retention) and 4.700 (testing programs) were approved as first and second readings. Staff noted the promotion/retention policy was updated to reflect State Board of Education regulation 0520-01-03-.1.6 and that the district will follow a timeline for retention decisions while allowing team-based review processes.
The board granted exceptions to board policy 5.1101 for two staff members who had earned degrees and requested associated salary adjustments. The superintendent said additional staff appeals of this type had been heard previously.
The 2026—27 district calendar was approved after the calendar committee reported widespread staff feedback favoring an option that gets students and staff out before the winter holiday. Changes include making Election Day a staff development (non-student) day and keeping Presidents' Day as a staff day instead of a make-up day in June.
The board also approved several new student clubs: a crochet club and a legacy and history club at Linden Elementary, and a Red Cross Club at Oak Ridge High School. Each of these passed by unanimous vote.
Separately, the board conducted internal elections; Erin Webb was elected vice chair by voice vote.
