Sustainability board rolls out Green Business application; council weighs county coordination

Dr. Julie Long, chairing the Sustainability and Resiliency Advisory Board presentation at the Jan. 15 workshop, said the board launched a Green Business application designed both as an application and as an educational resource for local businesses.
"The application is not only an application to apply, but it's also a good resource for businesses that may not meet the criteria but wanna know what is a green business," Dr. Long said. She asked the council to help publicize the program and encouraged businesses patronized by council members to apply.
City staff and council members said Broward County has rolled out a countywide green‑business program and discussed the advantages of a coordinated effort versus a Plantation‑specific program. Council members and board members suggested interim promotion of the Plantation application while the city evaluates whether to join the county effort. The board also described outreach activities in 2024 (Earth Day, Food Waste Prevention Week, a resident survey) and presented a draft five‑year sustainability plan for council review.
Council members urged marketing and the Chamber of Commerce outreach to increase enrollment; the board said two local businesses will be recognized that evening. Composting for residents was discussed as a possible pilot but city staff said no firm rollout plan was yet included in the five‑year document.
No formal action was taken; the council asked staff to explore promotion options and to report back on the pros and cons of a countywide collaboration.
