Solvang council fills Planning Commission and Design Review Committee slots; council seeks continuity

The Solvang City Council appointed five members to the Planning Commission and five members to the Design Review Committee (DRC) during its Jan. 13 meeting, citing continuity and a need for both historical knowledge and new perspectives.

Planning Commission appointments approved by roll call (5-0) were Jack Williams, Aaron Peterson, Brandon Sparks Gillis, William (Bill) Ziegler and Keith Adler. Candidates had stressed the importance of the commission’s role in balancing growth, tourism and local character; several public speakers urged retention of experienced commissioners to preserve institutional knowledge as the city addresses state housing requirements.

For the Design Review Committee the council appointed Esther Jacobson Bates, Jennifer Johnson, Melissa Bates, Charlene Getz and Richard Boyd (vote 5-0). Esther Jacobson Bates, incumbent and former museum director, urged staggered terms to preserve continuity across advisory bodies; several public commenters and applicants echoed the need to preserve the city’s architectural character.

Council members and public commenters repeatedly noted the incoming period of work on the housing element and other planning matters, including state mandates, and asked the new commissioners and DRC members to balance historic preservation with legally required housing objectives.

The appointments followed candidate introductions and public comment. Several applicants were not present or excused for the meeting; the clerk noted those absences when announcing the applicant lists.

The council voted to ratify the slates by motion and roll call; all appointments passed unanimously. The city clerk will notify appointees, update rosters, and advise candidates of commission orientation and meeting schedules.
