The Hoboken Board of Education’s wellness and governance committees reported several recommended actions related to student health, safety and policy.
Policy revisions: The governance committee noted three policy revisions slated for second reading and adoption: policy 5337 (service animals on school premises for students with eligible disabilities) and two staff dress-code/uniform policies, district policies 3216 and 4213. The governance chair said these items were being recommended for adoption as presented on the agenda.
Health screenings and vision provider: The wellness committee recommended approval of district health screenings for the 2024–25 school year, including vision screenings in grades K, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 to be conducted with assistance from the Jersey City Lions Club using a Welch Allyn spot camera. The Lions Club screening equipment was described as capable of screening approximately 100 children per hour.
Safety and mental-health planning: The committee also reported an after-action debrief scheduled with the Hoboken Police Department following police reports of gunshots fired Dec. 19 that led to a lockdown or shelter-in-place precaution at some locations. District administrators said the incident did not occur at school property and that all students and staff were safe; the district will review communication and safety protocols with the police.
Middle school resources: Committee members described plans to carve out a middle-school student mental-health center to provide a safe counseling/decompression space; staff said grants are being pursued to fund creation of the space.
