Halifax County commissioners on Monday approved two grant project ordinances: a federal congressionally directed award to buy a body-scanning unit for the county detention center and a $10,000 America250-NC grant to support semiquincentennial events.
Deputy County Manager Christina Wells told the board the federal award is approximately $225,000 and was secured through a member-congressional process; the grant is a reimbursement award, and the ordinance states funds will be advanced from the general fund and reimbursed after required federal reporting. Commissioners approved the grant project ordinance by motion; the county will use the funds to purchase a body scanner that staff say will reduce the need for hands-on body searches and improve safety for detainees and employees.
The board also approved a $10,000 America250 county grant for semiquincentennial events, including costs tied to a Lafayette reenactor visit in February, Halifax Resolves Day activities in April and a patriotic concert and laser light show on the courthouse steps. The county has already received 60 percent of the America250 award ($6,000); the remaining $4,000 is subject to standard reimbursement and final reporting.
