Commissioners honor animal shelter staff; county approves recognition for National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

The court recognized National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week and heard a presentation from Williamson County Animal Services leadership about outreach, volunteer programs and upcoming fundraising events.
‘‘They are innovators. They are leaders in a profession that's growing, evolving, and becoming more sophisticated every day and the nation has noticed,’’ Animal Services Director Steve Valenta told the court, describing training and certification invitations the county has received. Valenta described the shelter's work reuniting lost pets, increasing adoptions and relying on volunteer fosters and donations to provide services beyond what county funds cover.
Commissioner Coney, who serves on the shelter board, and other commissioners praised the shelter's creativity in generating fosters and donations and urged residents to buy event tickets and donate even if they cannot attend the upcoming ‘‘furball’’ fundraiser. The court approved the formal recognition by voice vote (motion carried 5–0).
