Brookings School Board accepts resignation, opens application period and moves Nov. 17 start time to 3:30 p.m.

The Brookings School District 05-1 board on Nov. 6 accepted the resignation of board member Kelly Books, declared the resulting vacancy, authorized notice and opened an application period with interviews to be scheduled in accordance with applicable legal requirements. The board also approved changing the Nov. 17 board meeting start time from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Board members handled the two items by voice vote during a brief electronic meeting. After roll call confirmed a quorum — with Stacy, Kelly and Terry noted as not able to join — the board proceeded to the action items. Cassie moved to accept Books’s resignation, declare the vacancy, authorize notice, open the application period and schedule interviews per legal requirements; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote with Juba, Cheddar and Deb voting “aye.”

The board discussed the second item with the stated rationale that a later start time would better accommodate candidates who might be interested in the vacancy. A motion to change the Nov. 17 meeting start time from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. was moved, seconded and passed by voice vote with Wes, Deb and Juba recorded as voting “aye.”

During the meeting Cassie read the district vision statement: "Empowering all learners to embrace and be inspired to realize their potential." The board indicated it will proceed with public notice and an application window and will schedule candidate interviews in accordance with the legal requirements governing board vacancies.

The meeting lasted roughly 10 minutes. The district did not specify the length of the application period, interview formats, or the statutory citation governing vacancy appointments during the meeting; those details were described only as "in accordance with legal requirements."
