On Nov. 5 the Budget & Public Employees Committee voted to recommend passage of Board Bill 93, which allocates $1,000,000 from the Grama settlement to the Impacted Tenants Fund. Sponsor Alderman Aldridge said the item restores a commitment made earlier in the budget process and directs the money to Employment Connection for one‑time relocation assistance to tenants displaced by unsafe housing or tornado impacts.
Adam Pearson, director of the Department of Human Services, said the program was set up by ordinance but delayed operationally while the city coordinated accounts and revenue sources; DHS staff said an application and process have been finalized and Employment Connection is expected to begin accepting applications and distributing funds in the coming weeks. Pearson said eligible applicants must show tenancy in an uninhabitable unit or tornado‑related housing loss; awards will be a one‑time payment based on HUD fair market rents for the unit size.
Committee members asked how quickly funds could be turned around and whether the program would cover eviction‑related relocations; staff said they would aim for rapid distribution and that the fund is designed to get people into safe housing quickly. The committee voted to pass the bill with a do‑pass recommendation.
