Mount Vernon wastewater treatment plant honored by state for 2024 performance

Mount Vernon City announced that its wastewater treatment plant received an outstanding performance award for 2024 from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
According to the city announcement, the award recognizes excellence in water quality monitoring and reporting for the water being discharged to the Skagit River. The city said that, out of more than 300 wastewater plants in Washington state, Mount Vernon was one of 121 to receive the award for 2024. City staff credited Gary Duranzo and the wastewater team; the city said the team has received the award 17 times over the past 20 years.
The city framed the recognition as validation of ongoing compliance and performance under the Department of Ecology's monitoring programs.
