The Mooresville Town Council on Nov. 4 authorized the council president to sign a cover letter so the town can submit an application for a trails and connectivity planning grant.
Parks staff described the opportunity as a planning grant to create a shelf-ready bicycle and pedestrian trails and connectivity plan. Staff said applying costs the town nothing and that the grant round is a one-time funding opportunity; per staff, the grant requires a matching contribution of $20,000, which the Parks Department plans to include in its operational budget for next year.
Staff said the application requires the signature of the highest elected official on the submitted cover letter; therefore the council motion authorized the council president to sign the letter jointly with the park board president. Council moved, seconded and voted in favor of authorizing the signature; the motion passed unanimously.
Parks staff also reported recent project updates: completion of base layers for asphalt surfaces, planned spring topcoat work, upcoming color coating for pickleball courts, installation of shade sails and relocation of a donated barn to a new maintenance facility. Staff estimated 1,300'1,400 children attended a recent Halloween hike and estimated more than 4,000 attendees including family members.
