The change would expand the facility from six courts to eight and reconfigure court alignment to reduce sun-angles and maintenance issues caused by tree debris.
Parks staff and councilors discussed trade-offs: removing trees would slightly reduce immediate shade but reduce ongoing leaf/debris maintenance and interference with lighting; staff proposed replacing trees further from courts with slower‑growing species and installing root guards if needed. Staff indicated the modification would minimally reduce contiguous turf used for events such as Peach Days and that alternative nearby locations (e.g., pump-track area) were under consideration for other amenities.
Councilman Hershey moved, and Councilman Thomas seconded, a motion to approve the concept and direct staff to proceed to engineering and cost estimation. The council voted in favor; staff reported $455,000 in RAP-tax funds are currently budgeted and available to apply to the project, subject to final engineering costs and council direction on the final scope.
