Council hears briefing on SB 329 changes to council pay formula

Paso Robles — The City Council received an informational briefing Feb. 4 about Senate Bill 329 (2024) and how it affects city council compensation rules.
City Attorney Elizabeth Hall told the council SB 329 amended Government Code §36516 to allow annual increases equal to the greater of 5 percent or an inflation amount based on the California Consumer Price Index, not to exceed 10 percent in a calendar year. Hall noted that because the council’s compensation was last set in 2024 and increases take effect when a newly seated council member is installed, any change the council seeks to implement would not become effective until the appropriate future council seating date (for example, after an election and when a new member is sworn in).
