The Monroe City Council voted Feb. 11 to award downtown economic development grants to two projects in the central business district.
After a public hearing and staff recommendation, council approved an $8,700 Pronto downtown incentive grant to Murphy—s on Main (108 North Main Street). No public speakers registered for or against the item; staff said the applicant had submitted all required documentation and the funds were available.
Council also approved two awards to James Scott Purdy for investment in the Preston Building at 113-115 South Main Street: an $8,970 Pronto upfit award (based on 2,990 square feet of first-floor retail) and a $37,262.58 development incentive equal to 2% of the declared property investment, for a combined total of $46,232.58. Staff explained these requests were outside current policy (the awards were requested to be paid in full), but said the downtown advisory board and staff recommended approval and funding was available. Council adopted the resolution authorizing the mayor to execute the required documents.
Council asked staff about policy revisions for downtown incentive awards; staff said incentive policies are under review with planned updates to come through April 2025.
