Franklin High School project moves from demo to phased turnover; first field and student parking slated for 2026

Contractors and county staff told the Macon County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 11 that demolition and site staging for the Franklin High School replacement are underway and that the project is on schedule.
Joey King, superintendent for Carol Daniel Construction, said crews are in "full demo mode," removing the old stadium and preparing laydown areas and worker parking adjacent to the Higdon property. The project team provides weekly drone photos to document progress.
King described a phased schedule: student parking and site work on the summer schedule will occur prior to the school year; the football field and stadium turnover is targeted for April–May 2026 so the district can hold athletic events and physical-education activities there. Campus turnover (move-in from the old campus to the new building) is scheduled for April–May 2027, followed by demolition of the old campus and final site/paving work through April 2028.
County staff said off-campus work is part of the project, including coordination with the North Carolina Department of Transportation on the Porter Street intersection and additional drainage and turning-lane improvements at Waller and Phillips streets to integrate the new campus with existing roadways.
Commissioners asked when parking would be paved; King said the student parking lot will be paved this summer. No budget or schedule impacts were reported at the Feb. 11 update.
