Boerne authorizes nearly $793,000 for dark-sky sports-field lighting at City Park and Northrop Park

Boerne City Council approved a resolution on Feb. 11 authorizing the city manager to enter into and manage a contract with Musco Sports Lighting LLC for sports-field lighting at City Park and Northrop Park, in an amount not to exceed $793,174.
Parks staff said the project will add field lights to Northrop Field 1 (an adult field) and to soccer fields 1, 3 and 4 at City Park. Staff emphasized the contract covers lighting fixtures and installation only and does not include irrigation or resodding of Northrop Field 1. The Musco system meets the city's dark-sky requirements and allows remote scheduling and preset control features.
Staff estimated equipment delivery would take about two months after ordering and that Northrop installation would take five to six weeks and City Park six to seven weeks, with completion toward the end of summer 2025 if the resolution was approved.
Council approved the resolution by voice vote; staff and council members described the upgrade as a needed improvement for evening play and practice. Parks staff said they will coordinate installation to minimize disruption to ongoing sports activities and will notify user groups in advance if any conflicts arise.
