Summary
The commission approved release for public comment of five draft TMDLs (indicator bacteria) covering Mustang, Persimmon and New Bayou watersheds and another TMDL for Cornish/Ponish Park plus an implementation plan for seven TMDLs in the Corpus Christi region; staff and stakeholders said documents reflect broad stakeholder participation.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted Jan. 30 to publish for public comment multiple draft total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for indicator bacteria and a related implementation plan covering water bodies in Brazoria, Fort Bend and Nueces counties.
Staff described a stakeholder-driven development process coordinated by TCEQ with local partners, including regional councils and Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi for the Corpus Christi work. The ED requested approval to publish five draft TMDLs for Mustang, Persimmon and New Bayou watersheds (Brazoria and Fort Bend counties), one draft TMDL for Cornish/Ponish Park (Nueces County), and a draft implementation plan addressing seven TMDLs in the Corpus Christi region of the Bays and Estuaries Basin (Nueces County). Staff sought authorization to make clerical corrections before public notice, if necessary.
Office of Public Interest Counsel indicated support for publishing the documents. Commissioners praised stakeholder engagement and noted implementation planning will follow the public-comment stage. Motions to publish the draft TMDLs and the implementation plan carried by voice vote.
