Panel approves compact to ease certification for school psychologists

Chairlady Ballard introduced House Bill 81 to enter Georgia into the interstate compact for school psychologists. The compact is designed to reduce barriers to certification and enable license portability among member states so qualified practitioners can begin serving students more quickly.
Committee members asked about other states in the compact; the sponsor noted states including West Virginia, Colorado, Nebraska and New Jersey had either joined or were considering legislation this session.
Margaret Ciccarelli and Rachel Greenlee, president of the Georgia Association of School Psychologists, spoke in support. Greenlee described the training required of school psychologists and emphasized the workforce shortage. "School psychologists have the highest entry level requirement into public education," Greenlee told the committee, and she said expedited portability would help place practitioners — particularly those serving military families — faster.
The committee approved HB81 by voice vote and will send it on to the next legislative step.
