The Charles County Board of Education approved routine meeting minutes, accepted a personnel appointment and adopted most policy changes during its Dec. 10 meeting, while returning one policy for language refinement.
The board unanimously approved four sets of minutes (executive session Nov. 12; Nov. 12 legislative breakfast; Nov. 12 regular meeting; Nov. 25 work session). It then approved personnel recommendations, including appointment of Markell Peavey as principal of Benjamin Stoddard Middle School after a staff introduction and board vote. "She has been appointed principal after serving in an acting capacity," Human Resources staff said.
On policy, the board adopted a number of policies in the 5000 and 6000 series after committee review, with targeted exceptions: the board approved the 5000 series, approved the 6000 series items presented (with some items withheld for separate consideration), and deliberated separately on policy 6433 (which addresses national anthem and flag etiquette at school events). Trustees amended the language of 6433 to shorten the prescriptive list and instead require respect and proper flag etiquette "while the national anthem is being played or sung." The board asked staff to return that revised policy as an action item at a future meeting.
Another discussion focused on policy 6421 (curriculum/homework). Trustees debated whether specific homework-time guidance should be placed in superintendents rules or policy language. After discussion the board approved the policy as presented; staff said superintendent rules will provide more detailed guidance and implementation.
Why it matters: personnel and policy actions set the districts administrative direction, establish operational expectations for teachers and students and confirm school leadership. The amended language on anthem etiquette reflects trustees effort to balance respect with a less-prescriptive policy statement.
