Graham County approves AOC‑funded juvenile activities coordinator to expand after‑school and diversion options

Herman Andrews, Graham County probation, asked the board Tuesday to approve reestablishing a juvenile activities consequence coordinator position that the county previously had on a part‑time basis. Andrews said the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) will fully fund the position and the role will support after‑school programs and alternatives intended to reduce the number of juveniles sent to detention or transported to other counties.
"AOC is gonna be fully funding it," Andrews said. He told the board the prior position provided juvenile tutoring and other services; the new post will include after‑school programs and other consequences intended as alternatives to detention. Supervisors asked whether the county currently has staff and were told the county will advertise for the position.
A motion to approve the new position was made and seconded and passed by voice vote. The board recorded the action as approved.
