DSS presents LEAP/CIP outreach plan, reports FY2024 settlement and caseload updates

Wilkes County Department of Social Services Director Kevin Brown presented the county—s annual Energy Program Outreach Plan — required to document outreach on the Low‑Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) and Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) — and provided monthly caseload and foster care financial reports.
Brown told commissioners the county received $478,000 for LEAP and $301,000 for CIP; those funds were expended in the prior fiscal year and outreach remains important even when the county exhausts funds. He said the crisis program received an additional $6,000 in May, serving 27 families. Brown and County Manager John Yates also noted federal changes under consideration for SNAP and Medicaid eligibility redetermination that could increase county workload if implemented.
Commissioner Hardin Kennedy asked whether applications were online; Brown said they were not but he could arrange to post them. The board unanimously approved the Energy Program Outreach Plan.
