Public Safety Committee: gang activity on multi-year decline; SWAT activations still occur

Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Ott gave the City Council a summary of a recent Public Safety Committee meeting in which Police Chief presented an update on gang-unit activities and SWAT deployments.
Ott said the chief reported a multi-year decline in violent gang-related crime but emphasized that gangs remain active and require ongoing prevention and enforcement work. The gang unit's outreach and intervention activities with youth and community partners were highlighted as a continuing focus.
On special-operations activity, the chief reported five SWAT activations so far this year (compared with six last year). Ott said the department sometimes activates the SWAT team proactively for high-risk situations rather than waiting for an incident to fully unfold.
Council members thanked staff for the briefing; committee members noted general progress while acknowledging the need to sustain prevention and enforcement efforts.
